Freeform optics represents a group of surfaces that are limited by neither symmetry nor equation. Surfaces can be represented in different ways from polynomial equations to zernike coefficients or a points cloud. The optics of freeforms allows the optical designer the highest flexibility and can enable the design of a system with better optical performance while saving on size and weight.
The manufacture of freeform elements is challenging in both surfacing and measurements and requires extensive knowledge and the application of compatible tools in hardware and software. SPO has enjoyed more than 20 years of development and experience in the production of freeforms.
